Previously, we talked about the AI Expo in Washington DC and the USPTO chat on artificial intelligence (AI) that I attended. If you haven’t read them, please click on the links for they pointed out the need for due diligence especially when using generative AI outputs for commercial purposes. Given the state of AI and the evolving government policies, how do we decide when and when not to use generative AI output for commercial purposes? Let’s zoom in.

Commercial Use

What is commercial use? Simply put, it is using content (text, images, video, etc.) for business or financial gain. Lawyer Rae Marie Manar wrote more about it about in Copyrighted. All in all, if someone owns an intellectual property, you need permission to use it commercially. But what about AI generated content?

Check it With Free Resources

We must do what we can to make sure the AI-generated content is not based on something someone else owns. Afterwards, we can decide for ourselves if we are comfortable to use it for commercial purposes. If you are unsure, it is better to ask for professional legal advice. But if you want to check it yourself first, here are the free resources I use:

• Use the USPTO Trademark Search Database

• Upload a portion of the AI text you generated to Google (or other search engine) and see if it leads you to a similar text

• Google Image Search - upload the AI Image then see if a similar image appears

Actually, it is not enough to check only WHAT AI generated. You must also check the terms of the app you used to generate it. For example, if you used Canva to generate an AI image, you need to check its terms for commercial use. I’ll discuss more about this in the next post. In the meantime, let us pursue being good stewards of the resources God has blessed us with including AI.

There were simultaneous seminars during the AI Expo for National Competitiveness in Washington DC on May 8th, 2024. I lingered to listen at some but stayed to absorb a “fireside chat” between a moderator and US Patent and Trade Office Director Kathi Vidal. I am very interested in the intellectual property issues involving artificial intelligence because I happen to file for a trademark and encountered some obstacles. Trademarks involve only limited phrases and/or images. With the advent of generative artificial intelligence, it involves a lot more. Here are my personal impressions while listening to the moderated chat:

• USPTO is aware of the growth and use of artificial intelligence and recognize the importance of leveraging its use within the organization and by the people applying for patents and trademarks.

• They are concerned about equity and availability of AI to ordinary people and businesses.

• They want to publish guidelines as soon as possible but acknowledges the importance of collaborating with other countries about it.

• When I went the the USPTO booth to get more detailed information, they gave me a card with a QR Code to the website shown below.

I went to the resources and found the Guidance on Use of Artificial Intelligence-Based Tools in Practice Before the United States Patent and Trademark Office which was published in the Federal Register. One significant quote is:

This guidance is not intended to provide an exhaustive list of possible rules, policies, or issues that may arise with use of AI in matters before the USPTO. As noted above, the USPTO has separately addressed the use of AI before the office when AI is used as part of the inventive process. The USPTO continues to engage with stakeholders through the AI/ET Partnership to seek the public's views on various policy issues that uniquely affect the AI/ET community. The USPTO will continue to study considerations raised by the use of AI within the IP community, including impacts on the integrity and accessibility of the IP system.

As they wrote, it is not an “exhaustive list of possible rules." In other words, policies are evolving. Still, it is worthwhile to be aware of what USPTO is doing to promote, protect and enhance the use of artificial intelligence.

Thou Shall Not Steal

Generative artificial intelligence go through tremendous amount of data and creates something new based on what we asked or prompted it. Now, who owns the generative content? Is the AI user/prompter? Is the content creator where AI based part of its research a part owner? One court case might get a legal answer. On December 2023, New York Times filed a case against OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement. This case might influence policies in the future. As Christians, we know that we should not steal. With AI, a lot of gray areas are emerging. Even then, let us ask for wisdom to know what to do especially when we use AI for commercial purposes. Then, do due diligence to make sure we are not infringing any intellectual properties. Next, I will share practical ways to use generative AI responsibly especially for commercial use like self-publication through Amazon’s Kindle.

For the first time in years, I saw more security inspections at the Washington Convention Center in DC than before, specifically for the AI Expo for National Competitiveness on May 7th and 8th. When I was a public school teacher in DC, I attended a lot of seminars there and was not inspected upon entry. The Expo FAQ gave more details as quoted below:

Are there any off-limit items at the Convention Center? Yes! Prohibited items include: aerosols, ammunition, balloons, bicycles, coolers, drones and other unmanned aircraft systems, explosives, firearms, flammable liquids, glass, thermal, or metal containers, public address systems, laser pointers, recreational motorized mobility devices, large signs and placards, toy guns, weapons of any kind, and any other items determined to be potential safety hazards.

Maybe one of the reasons is for the security of their guest speakers. When I attended their expo on the second day, I saw politicians and government heads. Or maybe it is now the norm in DC. Who knows?

WHO Were There And WHAT They Are Looking For

I saw a lot of government agencies, army branches and colleges with exhibit tables plus a few businesses. It was clear that they are all geared up to attract promising people who can help their organizations move forward and be more competitive. Below are some of the signs I saw:

Government agencies, businesses and the military are looking for promising people to train in AI. Colleges want to attract students interested in artificial intelligence. It is actually in line with the quote I saw from the National Security Commission on AI:

Change with the Times

Clearly, the job market wants people who are willing to adapt with the AI wave. Yes, many jobs will disappear. However, a lot of other jobs will open. Yes, AI is changing the tide. As Christians, what do we do? We have to know what it is doing in our industry and change with the times. It is like the advent of the printing press and the internet; they changed industries but they created more opportunities. As followers of Christ, we have to steward our resources and be good and faithful servants by adapting new tools of our trade. Next, I will talk about the only seminar in the Expo that interested me: the “fireside chat” with the US Patent and Trademark about AI.

Campus protests in support of Gaza started in April and is still ongoing as of this writing. The Chronicle of Higher Education reported that there are activists protesting in 90 institutions in different USA states, many of them in the north-east and California. What is the story behind their protests? Bestseller author of the Harbinger Series, Jonathan Cahn, released a 42-minute video [click here for link] to explain the student protests from a Christian point of view. Can artificial intelligence or AI help summarize a long YouTube video quickly?

Google AI List of Apps

Google Search AI gave me Chrome Extensions to help summarize the video. I do not like to install them so I looked for web-based free apps instead and came up with summarize.tech and YouTube Summarized. Summarize.tech allowed me to get a summary without logging-in. However, YouTube Summarized asked me to use my Google or Microsoft log-in to get the results. Both gave timestamps and detailed summaries. However, latter gave better looking output.

I watched Cahn’s video and the summary given by YouTube Summarized is spot-on. Moreover, the output is easy to read like the one below, complete with timestamps.

Gemini’s List of Apps is Different

Although Google also owns Gemini, it generated a different list of YouTube Video Summary Apps.

All in all, we can save time if we use AI to help us summarize long videos then decide if we want to watch some or all of the video. Remember, we should be good stewards of our resources including time.

In the last post, I used Artificial Intelligence (AI) to generate a book cover image. A reader asked me an important question: can we use AI images for commercial purposes? It turns out, the answer is complicated.

Simplifying the Complicated

Commercial use of text, images and other media is a complicated issue. It is under the Intellectual Property Laws of the country or countries where you are offering it. In the USA, there are different agencies that work together to grant the right, make policies and enforce the law. Google AI gave these details about it:

In other words, we need to find out WHAT are the policies and WHO, if ever, owns the images we use for commercial purposes.

Do Not Steal

Exodus 20:15 plainly states that we must not steal. We must also “. . . submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God.” Romans‬ ‭13‬:‭1‬ ‭NLT‬‬ As Christians, we must do due diligence to find out and follow policies. The easiest way to start is to ask ChatGPT to make me a table about commercial use of images generated by popular AI image apps. Below is its answer.

As you can see, ChatGPT encouraged me to check the commercial license policies of each app. I requested that it add Meta AI (Facebook) and Canva and the website of each. The revised output is below.

What to do next

Artificial Intelligence is opening up a lot of areas for debate, especially in the area of intellectual property. If you use an AI Image app, it is best to find out its usage rights. Sometimes, the terms are buried deep in their web pages. Still, take time to find and read them before using any images for commercial use. The first commandment with a promise is about honoring our parents (Ephesians 6:2-3). Can artificial intelligence(AI) help me honor my late mother? You see, my late mother was a teacher in the Philippines who went up the ranks. Before she died, I discovered an unpublished primary beginning reader draft. That was seven years ago. I always felt guilty not doing anything about her draft because I know how to publish books through Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). This year, for her birthday, I created her book cover with the help of AI in honor of her birthday a few days ago.

AI Prompts for Children’s Book

My mom created a primary beginning reader in Tagalog or Filipino, the official language in the Philippines. I decided to create an English-Filipino version of her book to reach more people. Below is the first cover draft.

I used Digital First, a marketing AI app that also generates images using Stable Diffusion and Dall-e 3. I got a lifetime subscription of Digital First through App Sumo and was still learning how to use it so I asked Google’s Gemini to list common art types used in children’s books plus tips on prompt engineering them to generate better images. Gemini gave me five styles and prompt structures:

1. Classic Cartoon - Prompt: "A cheerful cartoon squirrel with a bushy tail gathering colorful acorns in a sunny forest clearing. Style: children's book illustration, classic cartoon."

2. Soft Watercolor - Prompt: "A group of diverse children, laughing and holding hands, skipping through a field of wildflowers. Style: children's book illustration, soft watercolor.”

3. Detailed Realism - Prompt: "A wise old owl perched on a branch, with large golden eyes and ruffled feathers, gazing at a starry night sky. Style: children's book illustration, detailed realism."

4. Pop Art - Prompt: "A playful puppy with mismatched polka-dotted ears chasing a bright yellow butterfly through a pop art cityscape. Style: children's book illustration, pop art."

5. Minimalist - Prompt: "A lonely robot sitting on a hilltop, gazing at a single shooting star against a vast starry sky. Style: children's book illustration, minimalist, flat design.”

I chose soft watercolor and used the following prompt: “simple detailed farmhouse in the Philippines showing a vegetable garden done in soft watercolor type.” I admit, it did not follow Gemini’s recommended prompt to the letter. Nevertheless, it generated one out of four images that passed my taste.

Feedback from Friends and Family

I shared the cover I made to family and friends through Facebook during my mom’s birthday. They loved it. However, a friend of mine pointed out it is a Japanese house, not Filipino, because of its irimoya (hip-and-gable) roof! She suggested that I edit the roof and retain the picture. Actually, this is a common error of AI-Generated Images - hidden errors that can be discovered after looking closely. I once asked AI to generate a Philippine carabao and it gave me a 5-legged animal. I had to edit out the extra leg. All in all, in spite of the error, AI helped me start honoring my mother by helping me start publishing her draft.

Years ago, I was a corporate newsletter editor. It was easy for me to put together content, but it was tedious to edit grammar. Luckily, I had a part-time copy editor who polished my work. Now that artificial intelligence (AI) is readily available, can it replace an editor? To find out, I tried two AI editing apps and two that are general AI apps. I was pleasantly surprised with the result.

Devotional Based on a Worship Song

Last week I asked the free version of ChatGPT to write a devotional based on Misty Edward’s song called Summer Girl. In the end, I was unsatisfied with the result. This time, I wrote a paragraph myself as shown below:

Many women grew up without their dads. I was one of them. It was only decades later when I found out that my father issues left a hole that generated a lot of romantic pain during my younger years. Believe me, I thought my world would end then. Yet God was with me through all those pain. As Misty crooned: [ song lyrics here ]

Setting Goals with Grammarly

Grammarly’s website claims it is, “Responsible AI that ensures your writing and reputation shine.” I signed up for the free account and was immediately encouraged to download their app for my PC. I installed it in my iMac but uninstalled it after a few minutes because I found it intrusive and wanting me to use it with my browser. After I got rid of the desktop app, I was able to use their website editor as shown in the video below.

Grammarly asked me to set some writing goals. Then it processed my text and gave a few grammatical corrections that I can choose to accept or dismiss. It also gave a writing performance rating.

ProWritingAid has Many Features

Although I have a lifetime subscription with ProWritingAid, I rarely use it. After uploading the devotional text, I remembered why I do not use it: it has too many features and a higher learning curve. It seems contrary but too many options makes me work longer.

In the video I showed only a handful of ProWritingAid’s features. Some of them are:

• grammar check

• rephrase report

• critique report

• writing style check and a lot more

In the end, I showed the ProWritingAid’s Paraphrasing Tool. Sentence by sentence, it paraphrased my text and gave a number of options. However, the paraphrasing of Google’s Gemini was better.

Google’s Gemini Shines

If you have a Gmail account, you have free access to Gemini, Google’s answer to ChatGPT. I asked it to edit the same text and it improved the text and rephrased in a few seconds. It also listed the changes it made, as shown in the video below. It even gave additional tips.

Notion is not only a Planner

I use Notion as my planner and organizer. It also has Notion AI. I plugged in my original text and it gave the best edited version of the text as you will see in the next video.

Prompts Inspired by a Worship Song

Misty Edwards is a gifted worship songwriter and singer. Her album is in my worship playlist that I shuffle every morning to let God speak to me through whatever song the algorithm spits out. For the first time in months, it played Misty's Summer Girl. I realized the following lyrics have an important message to women:

“Life is not what we thought in teenage dreams...you’re stronger than those childhood games, just don’t give up. Love is in living and moving on. Romance is a tiny part of a bigger show. The tapestry of perfected love, of pain and glory, it’s woven of beautiful threads of old divine, a love that lasts not the fading kind, there’s a love that lasts, not the fading kind.” - lyrics from Misty Edward's Summer Girl

What ChatGPT Generated from my Prompt

Using the free version of ChatGPT, I prompted it to brainstorm a devotional based on Misty’s lyrics. Below is a screencast of what it generated with the exact wording of my prompt.

Did you see what it gave me? ChatGPT, instead of brainstorming ideas for me, gave a copy with an Introduction, 4 Reflections and a Conclusion. It just expanded the ideas on the lyrics I quoted. To make the output more useful, I asked ChatGPT to:

1. give me scriptures aligned to the reflections

2. list 5 hypothetical situations of women experiencing romantic pain where this kind of devotional will help

ChatGPT actually gave a good list of scriptures and situations as shown below.

I chose the last example: Jessica’s painful break-up with the following prompt: “Can you write a devotional about Jessica, example number 5 and the last reflection you wrote above.” ChatGPT surprised me with a 5-day devotional plan for example number 5.

I asked it to rewrite without Days 1 to 5 and convert it to just an inspirational devotional for the day and it generated the piece below.

My Opinion About ChatGPT’s Output

Yes, ChatGPT was able to speedily write a devotional. However, I think the final output is so far from the heart of Misty’s lyrics. I admit, my prompts need improvement. However, notice:

• I did not prompt it to write a 5-day devotional. I only told it to develop a devotional for example number 5.

• The final piece did not include Jessica’s situation. I only told it to rewrite without Days 1 to 5.

• It lacked authentic human pain and corresponding encouragement that most Christian devotionals deliver through scriptural insights

Personally, I do not like making AI write for me. If I will publish the piece above, it will undergo a lot of editing. In the end, it will be easier for me to write the piece myself. In the next post, I will attempt to write a piece from Misty’s song myself and use AI editors to improve it.

Change is scary. The Pew Research Center wrote that, “52% of Americans say they feel more concerned than excited about the increased use of artificial intelligence.” Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing our world at breakneck speed and it might feel like it is slowly surrounding our world. Well, I hate to tell you, but it already invaded our life as Economic Times and Forbes said. As Christians, how should we react? Alan Didio, a pastor and author, recommends stewardship and leveraging the advantages of AI in his latest book about AI:

“From a Christian perspective, one of the significant risks of AI is the temptation to attribute to it a level of authority, knowledge, and even reverence that belongs solely to God. AI, despite its impressive capabilities, is a creation of human hands, not a divine entity. We must guard against attributing God-like omniscience or omnipotence to AI systems, no matter how advanced they become. The challenge lies in achieving a balance, leveraging the benefits of AI without falling into the trap of idolatry or unchecked reliance. One potential approach to this is the concept of stewardship, a principle deeply rooted in the Bible. As stewards of God’s creation, we are called to use resources wisely, for the benefit of all, not just for a select few. This applies to AI technology as well.”

I haven’t read Didio’s whole book except the chapter on AI’s overview yet I agree with his position: we should leverage the benefits of AI as part of our responsibility to steward our talents, time, and resources.

Artificial Intelligence is present in our everyday lives as I wrote in the about page of this online newsletter. It is used in Google Search, Zoom, Facebook and McDonald’s. Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be confusing so when Amazon Web Services (AWS) offered free courses, I took some of them. One course, called Generative AI for Executives, immediately made me understand AI better. Actually, a particular infographic helped me make sense of it. In this post, I will share a similar picture that will help non-technical readers gain a basic understanding of artificial intelligence.

ChatGPT and AI Categories

The public was introduced to ChatGPT in early 2023. Technology Magazine reported that it “played a major role in bringing Generative AI to the front of the public’s mind, acting as a catalyst for transformation.” However, many people simply called it AI and it became confusing. Generative AI is a subset of the Artificial Intelligence family as shown in the picture below.

Once I saw this picture, it helped me filter out all articles about machine and deep learning and focus only on Generative AI which generates new content (text, graphics, videos etc.). AWS gave more basic information about it like it uses machine language to go through a vast amount of data, processes it based on parameters given, then generates new content.

Back and Front End

The scope of Artificial Intelligence is vast. Non-technical people like us should focus on a small subset, Generative AI, to lessen our confusion. Once I saw the infographics about it, AI made sense to me. Machine and deep learning were the backend code that made applications work. Generative AI was the front end app that I interact with online.

The fear of Artificial Intelligence or AI is real. Getronics wrote, “Alongside its remarkable advancements, a palpable fear of AI has also emerged.” People ask: Will I lose my job? Will AI robots control humans? As Christians, how can we overcome our fear and walk in faith?

AI App Experiment

A graphics application I use recently offered an AI version of their software. Intrigued, I prompted it to: “illustrate fear of the unknown about technology and AI.” It gave me 12 options, one of them is the image 👇 below 👇.

But I did not stop there. I asked the app to create another infographic on “how to overcome fear of AI using biblical scriptures” and it generated another set of images, one of them is the picture 👇 below 👇.

Perspective: AI as a Virtual Assistant

Did you see what AI did for me? It created, in seconds, infographics with text summaries. I did the thinking, but it executed the task. It helped me find data then created acceptable graphics in a few seconds. Basically, it helped streamline the process of digital creation and increased my productivity. However, did it generate the right data or did it feed me wrong information?

AI Hallucination

When AI gives incorrect output, it is usually called AI Hallucination which IBM defines as “outputs that are nonsensical or altogether inaccurate.” Zappier added it is a problem because AI presents those wrong data as facts then gave six ways to prevent them. Actually, one sure way to overcome AI Hallucination is to do the thinking yourself and treat AI as a virtual assistant. Here is my initial feedback or verification the AI output given to me:

• A cursory examination of the list of the fear of AI or AI Anxieties infographic seems correct and confirmed by Neuroscience which wrote, “The fear of AI often boils down to the fear of loss – loss of control, loss of privacy, and loss of human value.” The perception of AI as a sentient being out of human control is terrifying…”

• The scripture references seem acceptable. Still, it is better to go back to the Bible itself. Go get your favorite printed bible or find your bible app. To make it easier for you, I also have them in the end of this post. But first, let me give you my humble feedback on this simple AI exercise.

AI Exercise Feedback (Separate Content from Process)

As a former Special Education teacher, I became familiar in separating CONTENT from PROCESS. WHAT students learn is the curriculum or “content.” HOW students learn is a “process.” Similarly, AI Generative content should be separated from how it was generated or process. So first, what was the process? Here is a simplified version:

• I wrote a prompt: “how to overcome fear of AI using biblical scriptures”

• The software generated image and text based on the prompt in seconds from its database and templates

• It gave me different choices

• I chose one out of twelve images and did minor editing (I added my logo and the logo of the software that generated it)

As you can see, I was the one doing the thinking. The AI software was executing it, but faster than any human counterpart. What about the content? Well, it was acceptable except for the second one that AI labeled as “God’s Dominion” which I believe should be God’s instruction to man. Other than that, the content was acceptable after looking at two bible versions of the verses the AI gave. Look at it yourself below.

Bible Verses Mentioned by the AI App

I use the New Living Translation (NLT) and the Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC) so I can compare an easily-read version with the amplified one. Here are the verses recommended by the AI image software I used, arranged topically. It is my hope that you read them yourself and let these living words help you overcome the fear of AI, if that is an issue for you.
